Does object show on digital screen before picture is taken and not just thru optical lens?

Yes, in Live View mode. This mode can be enabled/disabled in the Menu, presumably to extend the use of the battery.

What size sd card
Answer:
I have 32gb cards and it holds a lot of jpg + RAW shots…. it your taking a long vacation I might recommend a 64gb card because space does become an issue with high rez pictures taking about 8mb per picture jpg and RAW about 40mb each adds up fast! If your not using Lightroom or Aftershop, don’t worry about shooting RAW
